Forwords is a concert benefiting the children's literacy organization SMART (Start Making A Reader Today). Your sponsorship will directly impact students' reading skills and self-confidence, and help them discover a lifelong love of reading. Since 1992, this nationally recognized, statewide nonprofit organization has engaged more than 118,000 community volunteers to help 180,000 students. Help empower Oregon children to read and succeed by sponsoring the SMART Associate Board's Forwords benefit at Holocene on October 15.

DJ ANTON

DJ Anton has been playing records to create good times for 2 decades. Hailing from Minneapolis, he’s been a part of Rhymesayers Radio, a founder of event / design group Wants Vs Needs and New York’s Lion and Lambs dance night. His sounds are rooted in hip-hop, but span contemporary dance music and an ecclectic slice of grooves that get people movin’ and smilin’ (and buying drinks). He's a resident DJ at Get Yours, The Amazing Stumptown Spelling Bee and holds it down as a designer at The Pressure.

ALEX FALCONE

Alex Falcone is a comedian of average height living in Portland, OR. He writes a column about movies for The Willamette Week and is the creator and host of the live talk show Late Night Action w/ Alex Falcone and the surprisingly popular podcast Read it and Weep, in which people pay him to suffer through bad books and movies. One time he was on the IFC show Portlandia and he still gets emails about it.

Despite these modest accomplishments, he somehow remains totally down to earth and approachable. Photo by Hiro Baba.

RONIN-ROC

Surely if you have been in the greater Portland area for the last 10 years, you have seen Ronin Roc. A photographer, designer and educator, he is also one of the most impressive DJs to come from the City of Roses. Ronin has been part of some of the greatest nights and events that the city has to offer. Ronin Roc is a part of the Ante Up crew, a team of Portland DJs that has continued to hold it down for the last few years.
